Love is what love does.

Love is what love does. (Nana)

There are so many ways to express love, and one of my favorite ways is to prepare a dish for someone.

When I watch them take their first bite, their eyes gleam with pleasure – that’s priceless to me.

You see, that gleam is reminiscent of the feeling of warmth and comfort I got from my Nana’s cooking. My love affair with food started in the kitchen and around my grandparents’ table.

It wasn’t just the sumptuous taste. It was love that went into formulating that perfect table for each one of us who were going to partake in the feast.

It still amazes me how my Nana would prepare everyone’s favorite – from the lima beans for the neighbor down the street, to the fried cornbread that enhanced any southern side dish. Oh! And the macaroni and cheese with a hint of sweetness, and the banana pudding that always sealed the deal for me. I am a firm believer that “food is symbolic of love when words are inadequate.” (Alan D. Wolfelt)

What ways are you expressing love this Valentine’s Day? Have you given thought to inviting your friends? You know – the ones you spend your downtime with? Or that special someone?

If you really want to make a friend, go to someone’s house and eat with him…the people who give you their food give you their heart. (Cesar Chavez)
